"Heresy is Fun" CD by Polish grindcore band Ojciec Dyktator impressed me much during the very first listening and stayed in my player for a long period. And then I decided to talk with boys about grinding daily life. So Orlando (guitar) is answering my questions...

Hello! Thanks for doing this interview! How are you? Is it beer time now?)

Hell’o there! Well, I’m sitting at work, just pretending workin. But in 4 hours it will be real beer and whisky time, hahah!!

First of all, unveil the secret: who is that “ojciec” in your band name?

There is one bastard priest (all of them are bastards in fact, haha) in Poland, who runs his own radio. He’s a nacionalist, racist and homophobic person. Unfortunatelly, he has got many right-wing followers (old pricks and grannies), and he calls himself Father Director. In Polish it’s Ojciec Dyrektor, and he’s not very far from being a Dictator, and this in Polish is Ojciec Dyktator. Got it?:)

By the way, what is your attitude to violence in a family, when “ojciec dyktator” beats his wife and children? Do you think about such negative social moments?

Huh, the meaning of the band’s name is quite far from the family dictator, as I wrote earlier. But, such “negative social” individuals should be isolated from society. The best way is to put all of them in one place, so that they may hurt each other, not the innocent ones.

Introduce in several words each member of Ojciec Dyktator...

OxDx was formed by me (Orlando) and Pompon – our ex-drummer. Unfortunatelly, due to his several back problems, he had to quit the band for a rehabilitation. Misiek, the third guy from the very beginning, took his duties on drums (previously he was our bass player). Ojciec – our vocalist, joined right after the band formation, when we already had the band’s name, hahahah. Then there is Kuba, our second guitarist, and Pyra – who took the bass duties (and sometimes vocal as well). You may know him from his previous band Vomigod.

How and when did you get together in this band? Did you have (or do you have) other side-projects and bands?

I was speaking about forming a gXc project in parallel with Misiek and Pompon, and one day Pompon found a place to rehearsal, came up with some riffs and that’s how it started. Then the rest joined.
In fact all of us used to play in various bands. Pyra was/is involved in Vomigod, I also play in a stoned doom band and from time to time as a live session guitarist in Heart Attack , Ojciec is starting some drink ‘n roll project as far as I know.

Honestly to say, your “Heresy is Fun” is one of my favorite grind CDs in last few years. Tell about creation of this album, was it easy or not? My fave song is “Loonathick”. And your’s?))

Thanx for such a words, dude! We’ve recorded it at Misiek’s studio in Cracov. It took quite long for such a short material. That’s a story for a loooong vodka drinking, hahaha! But, anyway – we had a good time recording it. As for the favourite song, I think that’s "Emo Holocaust", although we do not play it nowadays.

You’ve chose Brute! Prods from Thailand to release “Heresy is Fun”. But there are many labels in Europe. Why you’ve went so far? And what can you say about this cooperation?

In fact, we had the material ready and didn’t send it to any of the European labels, ‘cause we’re lazy fucks. Joi from Brute! Prods contacted us, and made an offer we couldn’t reject. It was also kinda exotic for us you know. He did a really good work with this release, (even releasing limited t-shirts), being very “into the scene” person. We appreciate it.

What is your concept of an ideal grindcore song? And what elements you consider to be needless in grindcore music?

Just listen to any Insect Warfare or Phobia song, and that’s it!

Where do your rehearsals take place? Is it difficult to find good place and equipment?

As I wrote you we are a bunch of lazy dudes and we do not rehearse regularly. We do it at Misiek’s recording studio, with our stage equipment. But hell, it’s hard to find a good and cheap place in Krakow to rehearse.

How often do you play live shows? Which were the most significant for you? And tell about the best one to this moment?

It depends. Sometimes we play twice, thrice a month, sometimes we don’t play any gig for two months. Once we shared the stage at MOSH IT UP FEST in Krakow with Agathocles, Cripple Bastards, Sayyadina, Birdflesh and many other gXc bands, and it was the “biggest” gig so far. We did 5 or 6 gigs with our good friends from The Arson Project and a shitload of other gigs with many other bands.
In fact at this moment we’re planning a tour in June with French sickos INFEST in Czech Rep., Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary, and I think that’s the most important – we’re moving our asses outside the Polish border finally!!

Tell also about the first in your life live show. What emotions struggled inside you? And what experience did you receive to this moment?

Hahaha, don’t remember. I was probably too drunk!

According to your song titles you prefer humor way in grindcore. And what do you think about serious social or political lyrics? Are they boring for you?

In fact, the lyrics (if there are any), treat about serious problems, but in a more or less funny ways. As for the so called “political grindcore”- usually those are people deelpy involved into the human and/or animal rights, anarchy movement, etc, and I appreciate it. We’re not so involved in such cases, that’s why we prefer to name our songs with strange names.

How many spiritus or green smoke do you need to write such masterpieces as “Fuck off Fucking Fuckers” or “Urghhurhguurhghhh”?:) What kind of doping do you prefer in common life? What is the best kind of relax for you?

You can’t even imagine how much do we need, hahahha! As for me the best relax is just sitting, drinking beer or whisky or just smoking pot, and listening to the music, meeting friends etc, nothing special.

Do you keep an eye on the latest cinema novelty? Can name 3 film titles you’ve liked?

I don’t have much time to watch movies, but I try do my best. I also try to avoid American shitty comedies, and horror remakes. And as I am a fan of a psychedelic and trippy movies, I can let you: The Holy Mountain, Let Den Ratte Komme In (the original, not the crappy US remake), and Into The Void (that’s a kick-ass). Lately I have also seen the “True Grit” by Coehn brothers and I do really like it (but it still isn’t that awesome as Big Lebowski).

Is your personal collection of audio CD (tape, vynil) large? What were the latest ones? Do you have rarities?

It’s all time growing!! Lately I’ve sold most of my tapes, as long as I don’t have anything to play it on, but I left some of the rarities (eg. Dead Infection and Haemorrhage demos). I collect both - CD’s and Vinyls (mostly), and got some really rare pieces. The latest ones are: the latest Motorhead LP (Lemmy is still unbrekeable!!), Entombed – Serpent Saints LP, Bloody Phoenix – Dath To Everyone LP, and some gXc 7’’EP’s.

How often do you here from your wife (girlfriend) or parents: “Stop this awful grindcore! Go work!”?:)

Everyday!! Haha! Well, my wife got used to it, as she had no other choice :) And as long as I work on a full time job it’s ok.

In your music I’ve heard blasting grindcore and groovy gore parts. So what is better – headshot or cumshot?:)

I think, it is needless to ask you what do you know about Ukraine, because we are neighbors. But what can say about Ukrainian bands? Do you listen to them or maybe even have friends?

Don’t know many of them. Epicrise is Ukrainian right? I do not know them in person, but heard some releases and it’s ok, eg. split with our friends from Neuropathia.I think Pyra, might say something more about it, ‘cause he toured Ukraine with Vomigod.

New Exhumed album will out in summer

US gore metal originators Exhumed have completed work on their brand new full-length album "All Guts, No Glory". The follow-up to 2003’s "Anatomy Is Destiny" was recorded at Arcane Digital Recordings in Arizona with engineer Ryan Butler (Misery Index) and at Trench Studios with John Haddad (Abysmal Dawn, Intronaut). "All Guts, No Glory" was mixed and mastered at Mana Recording Studios by Brian Elliott (Graves of Valor) and has been set for a July 5th North American release date. CD pre-orders are being accepted now by Relapse Records.

Looking for an Answer: new album artwork and info

Some good news from Spanish grinders. At the beginning of March LFAA did the final mix and mastering of their new album. Also they got the artwork from Nor Venagruesa, so now the album (audio master + layout) is 100% completed. There will be pressed a regular version and a Diehard Version with a bonus 7". The album will be called "Eterno Treblinka" (title taken from a sentence of the jewish vegetarian writter Isaac Bashevis). The label will be Power It Up Records (Germany).
Looking for an Answer confirmed also the Play Fast or Don't Fest.

Cut to Fit: Hiljaisuus (2009); Grind-11 (2010)

I want to turn your attention to these two pretty good demo albums by Finnish band called Cut to Fit. Here we have higly-charged straight grindcore dedicated to all commited fans of this style without any needless shit. Short songs combine energetic punk riffs with blasting grindcore aggression influenced by old school stuff like Napalm Death, Nasum, Terrorizer and so on. Both demos have worthy level of sound and the music itself, but I think that "Grind-11" is more aggressive and atmospheric. It signs the noticeable step forward in band's evolution. Although, I still have favorite songs in "Hiljaisuus" too, which has more punk touches.
I haven't read lyrics, but according to song titles like "Children of the Cold War" or "Chernobyl" and cover art I can suppose, that they mostly about social topics.

Next Cut to Fit record entitled "Babylon Burns" will be out through Scrotum Jus Records (Singapore) later this year. As for me I already want this CD in my collection:) And right now you can download aforementioned demos:

Tacheless: The music we play belongs to the underground and should stay there forever!

And now it's time to visit Germany and to meet Tacheless, really good band, which gives strong portion of old school grindcore. About last years album and daily band's life we've talked with guitarist Schlimm. So read the outcome...

Hello, Schlimm! Thanks for doing this interview! How are you, man? How do you survive in this frosty winter?

Hey, Serge! Thanx, I’m fine! Hope, you’re doing well too! This winter is a pain in the ass indeed, but spring is almost here, and I can’t wait to have some cold beers in the sun!

Please, tell about Tacheless. When it was formed and a several words about each band member. And what means “Tacheless”?

Well, “tacheles” is a common word in Germany, but has its origin in the jewish word “tachles”. It means to speak the plain, unglorified truth! In Germany you say “let’s speak tacheles”, if you want to clear some things up, without any blahblah. It means to come to the point directly, no lies, no phatic speech, only true words!!! We found the name very fitting for a band like ours, because plain talking is what we do musically and lyrically. We just come to the point! We only write the name with two “s” in the end to avoid that there’s another band with the same name.
We found together as TACHELESS in 2006, if I remember correctly. I think, there’s nothing special to tell about each member. We’re all friends since years and do music together in different bands since a very long time. Our average age is 37, so you see we’re doing this stuff for life, haha!!!

So all of you are not beginners in music. Tell about bands you’ve played in before Tacheless. And do you have side projects now?

Every one of us played in several bands before, reaching back to the late '80s. We played differend styles of music like death and thrash metal, punk, grindcore and so on. But forming TACHELESS was the best thing, that could happen to us, because it’s the essence of what we all love to do! Our singer “Mandrax” and I are doing music together since '91. We played in a grindcore band called PROVOCATION in the '90s and toured with EXTREME NOISE TERROR in '95. Later on, we played in a technical thrash/death metal band called HYSTERIA. Our bassplayer “Itak” and our drummer “Zyn” were in HYSTERIA too. We were just fed up with this kind of music after all this years and wanted to go back to the roots and start from scratch. We knew our other singer “Pedda” back from the '90s, when he sang in a death metal band called DISGUST. We asked him to join TACHELESS to complete the line up and he was excited from the first second! We have no projects beside TACHELESS and I think it's better to focus on one band, than giving only 25% by playing in four bands! But never say never!

Some words about your latest album "The World Keeps Burning". How do you rate this work? Tell about record studio and label. Is it expensive in Germany to record and produce CD?

It's always hard to rate your own work and I’d like to let other people decide, if they like it or not. But for ourselves, we’re very pleased with the result. Every bandmember had a big influence on how the album sounds. We really worked as a “band”, which made the album much more diversified than our previous album “Freiheit”. The new album is full of crust and grind riffs, but it also has a gloomy oldschool death metal feeling.
Our label GRINDATTACK is a very small label (yet) and the owner is a very dedicated guy!! I think, it’s the best choice for a band like ours to get supported from a small label that really loves what you do and still has this D.I.Y. mindset, than being one among a hundred on a big major label. The music we play belongs to the underground and should stay there forever!
It’s still very expensive to produce an album in Germany. But we have the opportunity to be friends with the guy from SOUNDSETTER Studio. It’s a very small studio with a more D.I.Y. character, but “Sebi”, the soundman, always does a very good job for low budget! We can’t afford producing in a big high class studio and I think there’s no need to, as we don’t want this plastic sound a lot of bands have nowadays. Most expensive part is the pressing plant. We’d also love to release our records on vinyl, but its still too expensive.

You have already two full-lengths and EP, but any splits. How can you explain this? Did you have proposals for doing splits and what is your requirement to split-mate?

Oh, we’d love to do a split EP, but we’ve just never been asked to do a split!! That’s it! If there’s any label or band, who wants to do a split with us, just get in touch with us! As long as the participating band is into the kind of music/ideology we are, there’d be no problem.

On the band photos most of you have true underground image: long hair, black clothes and so on. What do you think about musicians’ image in hard music? Is it really important? And what is your attitude to modern grindcore bands, which often break these rules?

The way we look is not an image, it’s just the way we like to dress. I can’t imagine to wear a pink polo shirt, haha! Of course, you can think of a “dress code”, when you look at us, but we would look like this, even if we were not in a band. It’s just us! I don’t have a problem, if you like to dress different, there are no rules!! But I admit, that it’s hard to me to trust a grindcore band, that looks like a “boys band”, haha! The main point is, that grindcore has nothing to do with fashion!!

And what can you say about humor in grindcore? When musicians have funny clothes, but play good old school grind, like German Attack of the Mad Axeman. By the way, do you in friends with them?

I know the band by name, but never met them and never heard their music. Maybe, I should. I must admit, that they didn’t draw interest to me as I saw their pictures. That’s because most of the bands, who emphasize on an image, cover up the bad music they play. Maybe, I do wrong in this case and their music blows me away, haha! I’ll take a listen! I don’t have a problem with humor in music. We’re also doing fun, when we hang out at the practice room and laugh our asses off. We’re funny guys! But I don’t share these childish kind of humor, that’s all.

What can you tell about concert life of Tacheless? How often do you play live shows? Did you participate in international fests or have some foreign tours?

We play about 15 shows a year. That’s far too little, but we only play if we’re invited to play. From this viewpoint, 15 shows is a good deal. We’d love to play more shows, but we hate to canvass to play a show! Maybe, it sounds idle to you, but its just honest. We had the opportunity to play some festivals with bands from all around the globe, such as Brutal Truth, Magrudergrind, Mesrine, Captain Cleanoff, Alehammer and so on! And we’re proud to got invited to play!
We’d love to go on tour but either we can’t afford the traveling costs or we go to work and don’t have the time to.

As I understand from the cover art of your new CD, you interested in social themes. What do you consider the worst social phenomenon in modern world? Is it possible to struggle against political evil just with revolution art (music, poems, films etc.)

I can’t pick only one problem as there are a lot of social wrongs! I think ignorance, decadence and hedonism are the biggest problems in the so called modern world. But you can put it all together under the term “stupidity”!
I don’t think that you can really make a change only by music or any other kind of art. But it helps to remind people to use their brain. Constant dripping wears the stone!

How much costs “one month of life” of common man in German? That is to say, how much common Germans spend in a month for food, for residential space. And is it possible to have music band without enough money?

This question is not easily answered, because everyone has his own living standard. I really can’t tell you more, because my opinion is not representative. A guy like me needs much less money to make a living than a family man.
It’s not easy to have a band with no money, as you have to pay rent for a practice room and buy instruments. But there’s always a chance. When we started to make music, we bought used instruments or borrowed stuff from friends or other bands. In part we still do, haha! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

One my mate from Germany once said: “If I want live good, I have to work hard”. And what is about free time for playing grindcore? How do you manage to live non-music life, to play in the band, to answer interview questions?

Your friend was right! But it also depends on what you think is a good life, as I mentioned before.
We spend a lot of our free time to run the band. Some people play chess, collect stamps, play soccer or whatever… We play in a band! But it’s not only a hobby, it’s a lifestyle, passion and life task! To be honest, I spend the most of my spare time to do something related to the band like doing artworks, writing songs/lyrics, networking and answering interviews like this. But I can’t imagine a life without this!

Most of Ukrainian hard music fans can’t visit European fests every year. Reason is simple: if you have enough money, you have no spare time because of work and if you have spare time – you have no money) And what is about common fans in Germany? Is it real for them at least one time in a year go to another country, for example to Czech Obscene Extreme?

I think, it’s the same for us as for you. Beyond doubt, Germany is a country with high economic status, but that doesn’t mean that we can go to a big festival or visit another country once a year! That’s unrealistic! As for myself, I’ve never been to a festival that was further afar than 300km! I never had the money to go to the OEF and never had the money to pay 100€ for a festival ticket in Germany! Who has???

What ultimate goals you have in musical activity? To visit more countries with concerts, to produce more disks, to sign a major or something else?

I just answered the same question for a German magazine, so I’ll give the same answer to you. We have no other goal than just making music together till we drop!! Of course, we feel damn happy, if people like what we do, but we don’t have any ambitions to become mega sellers! We give our best to write good songs/lyrics and everything else has to happen by itself.
If everything leads to the opportunity to go on tour, visit a lot of countries, make fans/friends all over the world and release more albums - that’s all we could ever have dreamed of.

What are your hobbies besides grindcore? Maybe, you engaged in other genres of art?

As for myself, I’m interested in any kind of art. I do all the artwork for TACHELESS and did some artwork for bands, we’re friends with, since the '90s. I also did weight lifting for a while, but I had to stop since my shoulder joints are corrupt.
Our drummer Zyn was an active hockey player back then in Poland (he’s from Katowice). He’s still into sports, specially hockey and socker! We’re all into movies! Not only that typical horror stuff. All of us are big movie fans!

What last three CDs were in you player? What styles do you prefer except grindcore? And did you ever disappoint in favorite old bands?

Ok, there you have me! While answering your questions I heard: “Audio Kollaps – Ultima Ratio”, “Dropdead - Dropdead”, “Disharmonic Orchestra – split with Pungent Stench”.
I don’t prefer a special style of music, as long it has a heart and soul. That’s it! Of course I’m into grind/crustcore/thrash/death metal at the most, but there’s a lot more to discover beside metal and punk.
Of course I was disappointed by a lot of my favourite bands, when I was younger. By now I’m much more relaxed about these things. When your favourite band disappoints you, there will always be another band to fill in for. It’s better to give a chance to a new band than sticking to an old band because they had a good album once. I try to keep myself open minded, but still love the classics!

Is Tacheless like a second family for you? And is it important that all band members in a band are good friends? Do you spend free time together except rehearsals?

TACHELESS is a second family indeed! You’re nothing without friends! It was my dream since I started playing in a band, that the band consists of friends, even if this goal is hard to reach. You always start a band with at least one friend. Then you fill it up with more friends, or at least, with musicians you become friends with in time. I can’t imagine to make something such emotional/personal like musik, with people I don’t like/respect.
When we rehearse, we’re not only doing music. We always talk about everything like personal problems, work, politics but also music, relationship, fun and everything good friends talk about! It’s like a party with friends where you get drunk and creative too. That’s always a blast!
So the rehearsals are our free time, but we also visit each other at home or go to concerts together if we find time to.

What is the most evil in the world: computers, Internet, mobile phones or “Counter Strike”?)

If I have to choose from this four things only, then I’d say mobile phones! The kids here in Germany (maybe everywhere) use their phone to annoy people with their disgusting private bullshit and abhorrent chart music! When I take the bus, its always a crucial test to me. I always feel the urge to slap those kids in the face, haha!

Imagine that you have an opportunity to ask god some questions. What would you ask him? And what is attitude to religion? Do you consider religious wars the real threat for peace in the world?

Probably, I’d ask god the typical question: Where do we come from and where will we go? I don’t take our little lives too serious. From cosmic view, our personal life is just too short and minuscule. On the other hand, man is the only (known) being who thinks about his own life – that makes us special (by now).
I’m not a religious guy at all, but I think about life in general, like (hopefully) everyone else. When people say they hate all religions, they don’t mean the religious faith inherently, but what people do in the name of religion! We don’t hate the belief, we hate the believer!! As always, man is most evil. So I do respect all religions as long as the believers treat every one else like they want to be treated. That’s it!
I would not consider religious wars the real threat for peace in the world. The main threat is, was, and will always be the stupidity, greed and blindness of man. Religion has always been a pretense.

Traditional question: what do you know about Ukraine and our bands?

I’ll answer these questions as honest as possibly – so I must admit that I only know a little about Ukraine and nearly nothing about Ukrainian bands! I really hope you can make a change and give me some hints about the Ukrainian scene and bands, I’m deeply interested!
The east is (or seems to be) still isolated as everyone here is looking for bands from USA or Sweden. That’s a pity, because I know that there are a lot of awesome bands in the east that would blow my mind, if I would only know them!! Instead we’re swumped by shitty bands that fit in the sales strategy. If you can suggest some bands, please let me know!

What do you know about France? Paris, the Eiffel Tower, Elysian Fields... And what is about Yattaї - blasting grindcore band from French Angoulême? About forthcoming new album, wine and aliens we've talked with band vocalist, Gautier...

Hi, Gautier! Thanks for doing this interview! How are you? Waiting for spring?:)

Hi, Serge. The pleasure is ours. We don’t do that much interview. I’m quite fine, I finish preparing our march mini tour in Switzerland and Italy and try to find some other gigs for the April French mini tour. And yeah I’m waiting for spring, my tan isn’t so good anymore, ha ha !!!

When the first Yattaї rehearsal has took place? That is to say, tell, please, some biographical facts from the band life

We don’t remember exactly when the first rehearsal took place. I think end of 2004, beginning of 2005. First, I wasn’t in the band. The line up was by then William (guitars and screams), Daniel (guitars), Thomas (drums) and Clement (bass). Then when looking for a vocalist, they thought about me. I was vocalist in a previous band with William called GASTRICK BURST in which he used to play drums.
After a few concerts with that line up and a demo CD-R, we decided to fire our bassist, due to a lack of motivation. Then we recruited Vian, a good friend of ours. Since that line up change, we recorded and play lot gigs mostly in France, but also in Germany.
We recorded the following stuff :

- Split CD-R with GASTRICK BURST : "Dance, you stupid" on Traumatized Records
- Split CD-R with DOSA/LOSTEROR/GRUUTHAAGY : "Experiment in terror" (Roots Active Productions) (2006)
- Split CD with CAKEWET (Dead Cirkus Records) (2007)
- Split EP with GRUNT GRUNT (Dead Cirkus) (2008)
- Split EP with THE FANTASTIKOL HOLE (many great labels) (2009)
- Split CD with JACK (Kasamata Records) (2010)
- Split EP with TREPAN DEAD (many great labels) (2011)

We played lot of gigs with many bands such as YACOPSAE, TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION, JESUS CROST, LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER, SUPPOSITORY, MAGRUDERGRIND, etc...
Tired of working in the underground, Daniel unfortunetly left the band in end of 2010. We are now working as a 4 pieces. But we are motivated as never before. We are currently working on the new release which will be our first album and will also includes all the songs from our previous discography.

Introduce each band member in several words...

William : guitars. The real soul of the band. A fucking rollercoaster on stage. A real freak on stage.
Vian : bass. The bassist, who has the attitude we wanted. Pretty shy, but not on stage and motivated as fuck to do everything.
Thomas : drums. A big part of the personality of the music with the William’s riffs. A great drummer, who plays faster and faster. I never stop repeating, that his blastbeats are with one foot only, old school style!
Gautier : vocalist. I’m the charismatic leader of that wild bunch.
We are all great friends in daylife.

As I know, you don’t have full-length yet. When situation will be changed?

Now we are working on that first album. That won’t be a real full-length. If you know ASSUCK, you know what an album represents for that band : 15 songs for 15mn. That will be more or less the case for us too, ha ha !!!
To be honest, we don’t really like too long grinding albums. There are lot of exceptions of course, but most of the albums are hard to listen in one time. Sometimes too repetitive, etc…
It’s really hard to please me as a fan with an album and most of us think the same in tha band.
We prefer shoter stuff and a listener that ask for more than a too long release people never listen.
We also want to put the entiere discography, not for the pleasure to fill that release. We’ve been asked many time of the song we released on split EP will ever be released on CD. Many people don’t have vynil player and can’t listen to a big part of our stuff. With that release, they will have the new stuff, and the older ones they couldn’t listen to. That release will also include unreleased tracks (8) we recorded for the split with KRUPSKAYA that has never seen the light of the day.
As we still work with underground labels that, like us, want to propose the bast stuff at very fair prices, that release will be a almost 70 tracks one with new stuff, unreleased stuff, hard to find stuff and maybe a surprise. But can’t talk about it yet, I have to work on it a bit more.
That release will be named : Fast music is Love. Because this is our real way of thinking about grindcore. A pleasure to be a part of a whole independent system, a real pride to be a part of the DIY way and always a blast meeting new people all over the planet.

You have very original band name. What is the meaning of “Yattaї” word?

Yattai has different meanings in Japanese. It means as “super” as “small food shop” ha ha !!! We wanted a name that sounds easy to remember, short and more original than the usual names in the scene.
The true reason we are called Yattai is quite stupid to be honest. If anybody knows Yatta, the Japanese band (a boys band quite ridiculous)… The name came from that band. We were drunk and we saied : let’s call us Yattai, as a tribute to Yatta ! I think that was my idea. I was drunk you know… ha ha !!!!

Tell about Yattaї concerts. How often do you play live shows, what countries did you visit and what ones you’d like to visit?

We all have works that didn’t allow us to tour as often as we would like to. But I don’t know how many concert we did, but more than hundred for sure.
As now we’re working as a 4 pieces and as most of us changed they professional situation, it seems to be easier now. That is why we can do 2 mini tour in 2 months.
We love to play live. We are born to do that and I think, without pretention, that we are quite effective on stage. By now, we only visited Germany, but soon also Italy and Switzerland.
There’s no place in the world we wouldn’t like to play at. No place.
There are years we’re talking about playing far east in Europe, but no one wants us in these places… ha ha !!!! After Germany, nobody answers our mail and no one invites us ha ha !!! Serge, please, invites us in your country !!!! ha ha !!!

How do you “tune up” yourself before live show? What is your own formula of good live set?

First, we avoid drinking before a show. We are less violent if we do, so really few drinks before the set.
On my side, as I feel obliged to move as much as possible (we’re doing a show isn’t it, so let’s blast all over the place ha ha), I prepare myself physically. Not doing real exercises or things like that but stretching on all parts that will be solicited. Thomas does a lot the same for his arms.
Our real formula for gig is : 2 people of 200, that is the same. If people came for us, no matter how many, we have to grind the shit out for them !!!! Give all you can and make sure these people will be happy with that !
We play every concert as if that is the last one. No matter anything else. And people seem to feel it and to like it.

What short statement can you say as Yattaї band slogan and why?

As for the release name : Fast Music means Love. As I told before, we are guys that are much into meeting people, that are proud of being a part of a really independent system, and who love to share ideas, stuff and everything else.

Do you have experience of playing in other bands and other musical styles?

My register as a vocalist is quite limited. So no, I always evolved into brutal stuff.
William played a lot of style, mostly when he was more on drums. He did HC stuff but also some African tunes, etc…
Thomas, used to play in a neo metal band. He was really young, ha ha !!!!
Vian tired lot of things but as a part of a band, only brutal stuff in my memories.

Tell about your making as a grind musician. When did you hear hard music for the first time? What tape it was? And what has inspired you for playing your own grindcore?

I grow up in towns with very few people at a time without internet. So my first introduction to violent music was with top 10 ha ha !!!! I am a big fan of Guns and Roses, and I think that I was 10 when I decided to become a rock star ha ha !!!!
That’s the truth, I think I wouldn’t have done anything if I didn’t listen to GnR. After that, I has been really fast. I wanted for some more stuff always harder, always heavier.
I tried IRON MAIDEN, but it was not strong stuff enough for me. And then PANTERA. It has been a huge step in my musical evolution. Phil Anselmo… If I do grind today this is mostly because (or thanks, it depends) to him. And then SEPULTURA, MORBID ANGEL and… NAPALM DEATH. Since NAPALM DEATH, I just want to do blasting stuff. As I was getting older, I wasn’t that much into death metal stuff as I used to be. Grind and crust stuff are the real thing for me and still are (talking about brutal stuff only of course, I also listen to lot of other things).
To end up that state of mind, I’m more into grinding stuff nowadays because I feel like this means being true to yourself, no fashion nor special look to have to be a part of. Stay as you are and just show us what you have in the guts. That is something I didn’t find anymore in the modern metal stuff.

If we try to compare underground scene in 2000 and nowadays, what main differences you see since 10 years? What features underground has lost and what – has got while this decade?

Lot of things change. Everything change. For the worst and the better. I think, Internet has been helping a lot spreading the word about your band, finding contacts, etc… New tools for recordings also helps a lot of band recording stuff in good conditions, at least better than before. The counterpart is that now, it is quite difficult to exist as a band due to the incredible number of bands that have been created since the last 10 years.
But staying on the statement as “it was better before” is ridiculous. The way things go allow you to do lot more things (how many new and great festivals have been created since the last decade?) and the real thing now is having the real guts to be yourself in that universe.
This is still DIY but with new tools. Up to you to use them or not and up to you develop a personality.
I think if we have been able to release all the stuff we recorded is thanks to the new micro structures that work as cooperative ones. Every last releases are cooperation between almost 10 labels. I’m proud of it. And the next album will be the same.
We won’t wait for a Relapse of 325 Thrash signature. We will put the shit out with all the help that really nice and involved people can give to us. Modern DIY maybe ?

What is attitude to grindcore in France, country of great chansonniers?

The French scene is getting bigger and bigger. More and more people are involved and information goes faster. There are more gigs than previous years. It’s always some kind of difficult because that is not really a bankable scene, but some people are now in place for years, develop street teams or sort of, and does the job very well. Many bands are real good and work very hard, even if they all don’t tour.

By the way, do you know that in countries of former USSR exists such musical genre as “chanson” – rogue songs about prison, thiefs etc. It’s a pity, but it is very popular genre among outcasts… Do you have similar shit in France? Maybe among immigrants.

Ha ha, no, we don’t have that kind of stuff here. But send me some links, I’ll have to listen to that. One time at least!

France is also well-known by its wine industry. What wine do you prefer? Did you taste rare wines? And what’s about other alcohol drinks (vodka, beer) in France, are they popular or not?

Yes wine is a really important industry here. I have to admit I’m a red wine lover. I’m not that much into white one. And yes I had the opportunity to taste really good ones.
Not really rare ones, I don’t have money for that (even in France, this is expensive) but really prestigious ones.
One of my favorite, even if that is not a rare or prestigious one is the Mouton Cadet. It tastes very good and this is one of the red wine I can drink all night long (which isn’t the case of most of them, it’s quite hard for me to drink too much red wine).
We have a long tradition of drinking alcohol here. Even for foreigner ones such as vodka. For having been in Czeck Rep, Poland and other countries, be sure the ones we have here don’t taste really good compared to the ones you have in eastern Europe.
We also have a great tradition in beers, but French beers, for the best seller ones, aren’t very good. I have to admit I only drink Belgium beers. These are my favorites.
We also have cognac and pineau done in only an area in France (near Angouleme where most of us live), Calva in the north, and many many more.
If we can play in Ukraine, be sure Serge we’ll bring some Cognac to you !!!!

In what life moments do you say “Yeah! It’s fucking great!” and when – “Oh! It’s fucking shit!”

It’s fucking great: seeing middle east countries getting on strike to ask for democracy. You can’t imagine how strong I feel that is. To me the real first important move of the 2010’s… Hope the result won’t be worst than the previous model.
It’s fucking shit: having the actual French government who imitates the US model on many points including health care and many more. I don’t want to make some narrow minded appreciation here so I won’t develop any longer. But I feel like we’ve lost a lot during the last 5 years.

What TV-channels do you watch – politic, sport, recreational? And what is your attitude to mass-media?

I’m a movie lover. I’m also working in movie making. So I watch mostly movies at the theaters and on TV. Every kind of movie or almost (I don’t enjoy watching musical movies).
I also watch a lot of serial such as Breaking Bad, Rome (I really love that one), The Shield, etc…
And when sometimes when I look at TV this is only in order to have a bunch of shit to vomit on for fun. I enjoy ridiculous police stuff !!!
I don’t enjoy watching sport and most of political stuff are just propaganda with mostly reporters that are not impartial so…

As I know Angoulême you live in is very old city. Do you interested in history of native land? I think, ancient architecture is good inspiration for black metal  Do you have black metal bands in Angoulême?

As for many towns in France, Angouleme has a great past. And I enjoy getting into history and stuff like that. In Angoulême, we have a cathedral which is very particular in his structure and is a model of analysis for art and architecture students.
We used to have one Black Metal band in Angouleme, called Helmut, but I think it doesn’t not exist anymore, ha ha !!!

How do you think, when we’ll drink beer with aliens from far planets?:) Do you believe in UFO and other civilisations? Are Egypt piramides the result of their work?

Universe is so big, that would be ridiculous to believe we are the only ones. I first study sciences and i have to admit that until we have a real proof of their existence, this is only a potentiality for me. I don’t believe they are already on earth of thing like that. But to me, this is clear there is someone else. And hope we will drink UFO beers in a short future ha ha !!!!

What do you know about Ukraine and our bands?

I have to be honest and admit i don’t know that much bands and else in your country. The few I know are : +/-, Meterlink, X-Box Murder, Face of Violence (i think they are Ukranian), Mutilated Immunity, 7 pages of Silence, Rise of the Cadia, Forever Wasted, Affinity Hypothesis, Hedonistic Exility, Mastemah, Birth of Ignorance, Knights of the Bayss, Nu Fuel…
In fact no band i know from your country does crust/grind or stuff like that. If you know any, feel free to send me mails dudes !!!

New Autopsy album is on its way to release

Legend of gore death metal, Autopsy, has entered "Fantasy Studios" in Berkeley, CA to begin recording its new full-length entitled "Macabre Eternal". It will be the first full-length since 1995 "Shitfun". The forthcoming record will be released 30th May (early June US) 2011 on Peaceville Records.
Autopsy drummer/vocalist, Chris Reifert, states: “We've brewed up the sickest and heaviest material that our rotten souls could possibly spew forth, and we are confident that it's our best stuff yet. The EP was a taste of what's to come, but now it's time for the full assault from beyond the grave.”
He continues: “The album will contain no repeated EP tracks, no re-recorded old songs, no triggered trickery, and nothing less than the pure death metal brutality that Autopsy has always delivered."
Autopsy announced its permanent reunion in June 2010, and then released ‘The Tomb Within’ EP, the band’s first collection of newly recorded tracks in over a decade, in October. The EP was recorded at Fantasy Studios with Adam Munoz, and reunited the original trio of Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler, joined on bass by Joe Trevisano (ex-Abscess).

Phil Vane of Extreme Noise Terror passed away

Very sad news came from Darren "Pig Killer" Olley, ex-drummer of ENT. Here is his post on Grindcore.com: "For those of you who haven't heard, it is with great sadness to tell you that my great friend and Extreme Noise Terror bandmate, Phil Vane passed away in his sleep last Thursday. After spending months at a time on the road with him on the ENT tours, I saw nothing but a good, honest man. Gonna miss him".

Hi! Thank you for doing this interview! I hope, I don’t occupy your time much?

Patrik: Not at all, this is actually our first REAL interview for Feastem.
Antti: Not the first actually, we did one for a local newspaper in 2007...
Olli: Aaw c'mon guys! We've had interviews! Its been mostly "Sir, don't you think you've had enough to drink?"

What’s your attitude to interviews in general? Do you like to read interviews with other bands in zines, webzines? And what kind of interviews is interesting personally for you?

Patrik: I actually don't follow the magazines or webzines at all, I just randomly check if some good band is having a gig nearby. I don't follow the news about music, I just love to play & listen.
Antti: We're not tired of answering questions yet, so all you zine-writers out there: feel free to contact us!
Pete: Interviews are great, I love talking about myself, makes me feel important, haha! A good interview is full of surprises!

First of all, please, introduce yourself in several words. Occupation, hobbies, interests… And a couple of words about band name – why Feastem?

Patrik: I'm just a normal bastard living in a redneck-filled city. I love beer, music, cars and bad humour. I graduated as a media assistant a couple of years ago and now I study to be a truck driver. I also work in my cousin's sound & video production company as a technician and we do a lot of gigs all over Finland.
Antti: Hello, I'm Antti and I'm an alcoholic. Other than that, I study music and play in several different bands, none of which (besides Feastem) are grindcore or even any kind of heavy/extreme music. I like diversity! There's not much in life for me besides music, it consumes all my time and sucks out my soul... The name Feastem was our ex-singer Kari's idea, I don't think it means anything. We just wanted a name that wasn't taken by any other band.
Olli: I'm an almost thirties hitting dreadhead from a town a couple hundred miles from the Russian border. I'm trying to survive in the needs and standards that modern society is testing us with. I love messing with guitars.
Pete: I'm the newest member in the band. Music is my life, I have a couple of other bands, I DJ a lot, do radio shows, tour merchandising for bands, work at venues & festivals... That's pretty much everything. I like to smoke, grind & sleep. I'm also a relatively good cook and read audio books for the library for the blind.

Olli, you also play in Afgrund. As Feastem that band has many concerts. How do you divide your time for both such bands? Did you have any problems with concerts?

Olli: Well.. The pace of concerts is not so hardcore for either of the bands if you think about it. Though I'm not sure how it is in Ukraine? :) Dividing the time ain't rocket science really, you just got to keep track of not getting double booked. But yeah, things are quite busy. I'm doing 3 different jobs, studying my last year at the Design Academy of Kuopio and have a bunch of other stuff to focus on too. I think everyone in Feastem has their own projects, as Pete has Famine Year, Patrik is working at his cousin's label doing random gigs and Antti is studying music in Tornio and naturally has a bunch of sideprojects. I think its healthy in a way that we give each other space and do things without too much pressure. As for Afgrund's side: Armin is the lead singer of Distaste and has sideprojects too, Panu plays in GAF, not sure about Enrico's side projects. Anyway, to conclude: If you really love to do something, fuck the obstacles and do it!
Pete: Olli can multiply.

Let’s talk about new Feastem album “World Delirium”. Tell about it: labels, number of copies, length (number of songs, minutes) and so on. And what is your personal attitude to this work? Is record session on Finnvox – expensive pleasure?

Patrik: The label is Obscene Productions from Czech Republic, the same guy who is behind Obscene Extreme Fest. I'm really happy for our cooperation, everything has gone as we planned, I think. The album includes 18 tracks and the lengths are all around 1 min. I like this album 1000 times more than the previous. Sound, playing and production is better and tighter, songs are faster and longer (damn tough to play live). I think everything is better in this album and i'm glad that we were able to get a new singer Petri in our group too.
Antti: The album is 27 minutes long, so that makes the average song length 1:30. I'm also very pleased with this one, it's way angrier than the previous one (Fear in Concrete) that had songs ranging back from our first rehearsals. The next one's gonna be even more fast & furious! ;) We actually didn't record this one at Finnvox, but Tuupa & Posti studios, which are way smaller. But I think the sound is much better.
Pete: I am very proud to be a part of this record. It fucking kills.

Have new songs some fresh influences comparing with previous works or you continued traditional furious way?

Olli: Personally for me this turned out to be a "transformation album" since we actually recorded vocals with Kari too. The lyrics were quite shit, and after his departure, we got Pete to take the rudder. And it's been great. Remembering the first takes in the studio still gives me chills. There's actually a tape of me videotaping Pete's first vocal takes and you can see my hand shaking! :D AND NOT FROM TOUCHING MYSELF!... much... As what comes to the influences, for me its my car Saab 900. The motor is almost dead and it beats to the rhytm of 260bpm while idle and its a good backing track for humming riffs!
Antti: Since the first album we did our first two European tours and saw lots of other bands, so that obviously influenced us a LOT. Also I think the new songs are more punk and less metal compared to the oldies. As for yet unreleased songs, I think the direction is the same: faster & more punk!

In album title and cover art work we can see deep social sense: anti globalism, world crisis etc. And according to this art the root of all evil lays in USA, am I right? And what is your attitude to another globalist – Russia? I saw in TV news that there are lessons of Russian language in Finnish schools.

Antti: I think the album art is like that mostly to stick out and make the impression "yeah!" You can tell it's not a new age/easy listening album. The statue of liberty is a strong symbol so it fits this purpose well! Lots of things in the USA are fucked up, but then again lots of things all over the world are fucked up. As for Russia, I feel kinda bad for the people, they've been oppressed by their leaders for a long time and have lots of poverty. Russian language isn't mandatory in Finnish schools, it's just available in some, if you want to study it.
Pete: I wouldn't say USA is the root of all evil, to me the artwork speaks more about the decline of western civilization and the values and morals we're being fed. It's about the "world delirium", you know? We're so drunk on the idea that we are the peak of evolution on this planet, we think we're free while in reality we are not. As a species, we are holding a gun to our head. Resources are depleting, our morals are just double standards, people care less and less about the world we live in... Like Antti said, the statue of liberty is a strong symbol everyone recognizes and the way I see it, the statue symbolizes all the things the western world WANTS to be but ultimately can't because of people's greed. The western world wants to be the American dream, the seemingly successful story of man's triumph over circumstances. That, unfortunately, is impossible because of the system we've built and they way us people are "wired". All governments are evil, some more, some less.

Are you really interested in politics or it is just traditional part of musical style? Do you ever take part in protest demonstrations or participate in some political clans? And what is attitude to revolution in Egypt?

Antti: I'm quite interested in politics and social issues, but I don't try to write too "political" lyrics, more of it is just anything that pisses me off. I think we are relatively neutral politically, vaguely somewhere in the left/green/anarcho-side. The Egyptian revolution shows that the people can do something when they're screwed by their leaders, so thumbs up for them! I'm just a bit worried how things are gonna evolve there.
Pete: I'm fairly interested in politics as I think everybody should be. I try to keep informed of what happens around me and especially "behind the curtains", if you will but I'm not really involved in it. My lyrics deal with my general distaste for humanity and the way things work in this world. I agree with Antti, I think we all have the same values that lean towards the left/green/anarcho-side but we're quite moderate, we don't wear balaclavas and throw Molotov cocktails on a daily basis. Maybe we should? The far East is doing that now, there's a real change going on. I only hope it doesn't lead to religious dictatorship because the only thing worse than a dictator is a religious dictator.

I think, that’s enough about politics, because it is really dirty thing. Let’s continue talk about music. In your songs you combine grindcore and thrash/black oldies. Why it so? Black metal is popular in Finland, so it influenced your music? But as I know, black metal fans don’t like grindcore. Do you saw them on your concerts?

Antti: In my teens I used to listen to ONLY black metal, so it definitely has an influence on the songs. Nowadays I find the scene a bit funny... There hasn't been many black metal people on our shows, I think? But then again, there's not many people at all on our shows...
Patrik: Well I have to admit that I personally like black metal much more than grindcore. Grindcore is just much more fun to play, it's more aggressive but in a good way, with a twinkle in the eye. The only good thing in grindcore are the drummers, they are always getting faster and faster like an AK-47...That works for me! In black metal I listen more the guitars and the melody, like old Dark Funeral for example.
Pete: I can't really speak for the other guys and I don't write any music for Feastem but I would say that to me it all sounds very natural, I doubt there's been much deliberation like "this song needs a black metal part..." To me it sounds like everything has come naturally, just fallen into place. Genres are for frustrated music journalists.

In general what do think about experiments in music, unusual combinations of styles? Can musicians make radical changes in their music just because their own wish? Or they must be honest with fans? For example, imagine such situation: your favorite grindcore band decided to play old school thrash. What will be your reaction as a fan?

Patrik: It depends, for example one of my favourite finnish black metal band, Thyrane played good old black metal and a couple albums later they made a slower industrial album. No blast beat or black metal riffs. But still, after the first shock I realized that the music was still damn good.
Antti: Yeah, it's just a matter of whether the music is good, fuck genre boundaries! But don't worry, we're not gonna change our style in a while...
Pete: Agreed, fuck genres! I love to listen to music that mixes unlikely bedfellows like jazz & grindcore. It's all about pushing boundaries and creating something truly new and inspiring.

Remember the first release of Feastem. What emotions filled you when you took the disk in hands?

Patrik: I would throw it in the trashcan! Shitty sound and shitty playing.
Olli: It's banned from distribution! If I ever see one, I will destroy it!
Antti: When we did it, we had only been playing together for a few months, sure it was nice to have a demo in our hands but listening now it's not so great...
Pete: I have no emotional attachments to it whatsoever...

How much time it takes you to create new song – from the idea through rehearsal till record? And the same question to the whole album – how long did you create “World Delirium”?

Patrik: Antti and Olli write the songs and send them to us. We listen those demos and practice them to the next reheasals. We all live very far from each other so we practice very seldom, usually one week before the next gig. We practiced most of the WD songs before the last European tour, we actually had a chance to try how those songs will work live before going to the studio. Immediately after the tour we went to Tuupa Records Ltd studio to record the drums and the bass, it took us one weekend. One funny thing is that I actually recorded two songs that we had never played before. I learned them in the studio and recorded those songs in little pieces. A couple of weeks later Olli played the guitars. The next thing was the vocals but that was when the problems started. The album was delayed because of the line-up change. Finally when the master track was ready, we had to find a good label and design the album layout. All this took nearly half a year so the final product was in stores in January 2011. It was a long process, like the first one. It's very difficult to plan everything because of our other projects and the fact that we live so far from each other.
Antti: When I write a song I usually make a pretty finished demo version of it by myself. That process can last from minutes to years, depending on how well the riffs gel together. There might be a brand new riff with another that's five years old in the same song! But just yesterday I wrote and recorded a new song in about half an hour. I usually try to write lyrics to the songs (if I have an idea) around the same time I write the music to be in the same state of mind... But it's not always like that either.
Olli: Depends on how much/what kind of drugs you got.
Pete: I like drugs.

Do you have such songs, which you don’t play in Feastem, because don’t like them or they are not in style. Or each song is important for you?

Antti: There's a few old songs we don't do anymore, but mostly we only make awesome songs! ;) In other words, if we're not satisfied with a song or a riff, we abandon it right away. All songs fit the style somewhat, we have other bands for other kind of stuff.

Among topics of Feastem lyrics I saw word “alcohol”? Vodka “Finlandia” is well-known in the world. Is it expensive in Finland too? What is your attitude to alcohol? Is it right that in Finland people can drink a lot without being drunk? Can you remember you first time been drunk in shit?)) Did you taste Ukrainian vodka, we call it “gorilka”?

Antti: Yeah, Finlandia is expensive, it's for snobs (good though!). I prefer Jaloviina (a mix of brandy and spirit). I think I'm the worst drunk in the band, so I'll answer this! I have a kind of a love-hate relationship with alcohol, it's fun to drink with friends but of course it takes it's toll, especially when you do it 3-4 times a week. We drink a lot and we do get drunk, you should see a Finnish town centre 3:30 AM on a Saturday, it's more like a zoo... With zombies mixed in... I think I was 14 when I started my career as a drunk. I haven't tasted gorilka YET, I hope we can come there some day and try it!
Olli: Never drunk shit. I was probably 14-15 when I passed out the first time. Unlike Antti, I ain't that proud that I drink. not at all :) Seen so many people face down because of it, its creepy. I guess I'm getting old.
Pete: I was around 14 when I got wasted the first time too... Don't really remember much from it, for obvious reasons, haha! Drinking in bars is quite expensive in Finland, especially in Helsinki but you can always go to the liquor store and buy a cheap vodka bottle or wine and get mashed before going to the bar! I've personally been drinking way less this year than before, last year I was drinking waaay too much, I even got injured a couple of times... I would love to taste Ukrainian vodka too, hope we get the chance to come there one day!
Patrik: When i was underage i wasn't so interested of drinking, i didn't even like beer. I just watched from the side how my friends were wasted and act stupid. I was 17 when i went first time to the pub. After that i drinked couple years nearly every weekend. Nowadays i try to drink less as possible...i hate hangovers and like Pete said it's so damn expensive to drink in Finland. But of course tours, festivals and summer are good exceptions.

In continue of alcoholic question)) What Finnish word is equal to English “hangover”? Could you give your own recipe how to struggle against hangover?

Antti: In Finnish we usually call it "krapula" (after the Latin word "crapula") but there's many other names for it too. The best recipe is of course a bottle of Jaloviina! If that seems impossible, then just mineral water, pizza and TV.
Pete: Yeah, 'krapula' is the most common word for it although we have a bunch of words for it: darra, kankainen, kohmelo, kanuuna... Best hangover drink is 6cl of Jägermeister mixed with a can of Red Bull. Drink it fast.

Let’s talk about Feastem concerts. What are your impressions about OEF 2010? Some people say that sound was really bad… And what conditions must create organizator in order you say: “Yeah, man! This gig was great!”

Antti: Well, actually we weren't at OEF '10. When we played there 2009 it was great in every way, though it was at a different place. It's always nice if the organizer arranges food and drinks backstage and makes sure we have the equipment ready (drums, cabinets, PA), but I think the audience is more important in the outcome.
Olli: Wasn't there in 2010, I was studying in Portugal for one semester, and couldn't make it. In 2009 though, the sound was great, mostly because we had Panu from Afgrund behind the main mixer. Audience told us the sound was great too. Gigs are always great. :)
Pete: A good promoter provides us with food, drinks, a place to sleep and most importantly, keeps his promises.

And what can you tell about Feastem European tour? Can you name the best and the worst things from this tour. Which cities did you like much? And maybe – one fun story from tour days?)

Olli: Best thing in the first tour was beating The Arson Project's guitarplayer Elis for hours with a towel in Poland with the rest of the band while he was trying to sleep. That was epicly hilarious! The worst was either our former singer burning his leg a week before the tour and having to take him constantly to different hospitals and canceling some shows or the breaking in to my car in Berlin.
Patrik: I think the best thing was to play in OEF and also just being there. It's well organized, all the people and the atmosphere are indescribable. Worst thing was of course the thief who broke into our car and stole mine and Olli's cameras... And our tour money... Fucker.

What defects you see in grindcore as a life style (not only music)? Did you ever regret to be grindhead? Maybe your parents in their dreams saw you as successful businessmen or somebody like that))

Olli: Grindcore has only positive effects!
Antti: Haha, have to agree with that! There's no regrets when you do what you love!
Pete: Grindcore is love. My parents have already abandoned all hope, I think they're happy I'm doing something that has kept me out of harm's way (most of the time). Besides, I am adult in my early thirties, what are they gonna do? Ground me?

Our traditional question: what do you know about Ukraine as a country and about our musical bands?

Olli: Isn't that the country that has Swedish colors in their flag?
Antti: I know Mila Kunis! I honestly can't name any Ukrainian bands, hopefully some day!
Pete: I have to say the first things that come to mind when I think of Ukraine are (unfortunately) Chernobyl and (even more unfortunately) national socialist black metal but also beautiful women! I would really like to visit there one day.

German Power-It-Up records announced new split: "We are very pround to annouce that we can put out the Haemorrhage / Disgorge - split MCD and 10". This will be the first time that Haemorrhage put out something via 10". Both bands recording unreleased material for these split. The 10" will be release in a noble gatefold sleeve. 10 Years of Antigama

Some fine news from awesome Polish grind band: "Hello there. Some news from our camp. After long silence due to making new material, completing the line up and doing other non musical things the band entered the studio in January to record the new material. The songs were recorded in "Progresja Studio" with Pawel Grabowski and mixed and produced by Szymon Czech. The new stuff will be released soon on the split CD with Italian grinders Psychofagist. The preview of the new music will soon be available on band's official webpages. Apart from the tracks recorded for the split CD Antigama have almost completed rehearsing for the upcoming full length record. The new yet untitled album will be recorded and produced by Szymon Czech in spring 2011. It seems to be the most diverse recording from the band so far.

10 years of Antigama.
For this year's Antigama's 10th anniversary the band plan a special gig with invited guests in Progresja club at the end od 2011 and a special CD compilation on their 10-year music journey with previously unreleased material, live trax, remixes and covers. Antigama also plan to play gigs in Poland and abroad. In the nearest future the vocalist Lukasz Myszkowski will take part in this year's Gebofon, a festival of vocal arts devoted to the phenonenon of human voice. His workshops and special live show accompanied by bands guitar man Sebastian Rokicki will take place in in Filharmonia Lodzka in Lodz in February (details: filharmonia@filharmonia.lodz.pl)".

News from Relapse Records: "Rotten Sound has debuted the video for “Hollow”, taken from their forthcoming album "Cursed", online now at the Decibel Magazine blog. “Hollow” was directed by Casper Haugegaard for Jawbreaker Productions. Rotten Sound has previously posted the live video for “Self”, also taken from "Cursed". The “Self” video was filmed by Rami Kallio at Rotten Sound’s show at Vastavirta in Tampere, Finland. The video uses the album version of “Self” that features guest vocals from Victims’ Johan Eriksoon.

Rotten Sound are currently on tour in North American as part of “The Finnish Metal Tour 2” alongside Finntroll, Ensiferum, and Barren Earth. During the decade these guys play really strong oldschool grindcore, which I rate as "must have" for all committed grinders. And their 4th full-CD "Krvave ruke - Krvavi novac" ("Bloody Hands - Bloody Money") can be mentioned among the best grind releases 2009. So, Angeri (vocals) is answering my questions...

Hi, Angeri! Thanks for doing this interview! How are you? I hope, I’m not interrupting your “beer time” with my questions)) And what do you think about last fucking cold and snowy winter?))

Hi, Serge, and big hello to all readers and supporters of "For Grind". Well, somehow I always find some time for beer & music, but I have dificulty with finding time for some other stuff, he he. Yes, this winter was really fucked up. Everywhere in Europe was Chaos with overflows and snowstorms fucking unbelievable.

Of course, firstly let’s speak about BG new album, which was released in October 2009. Half of an year has gone, so it’s time to sum up results. How many reviews have you received to this moment? Are they totally positive or there is some criticism? And how you rate this album yourself comparing with previous works? As for me, I consider this album very good!

OK, that’s right, new album was released in October 2009, but unfortunately we got only two reviews so far, I think guys on EBM records are very busy with new releases. One is on the Serbian webzine “????” (I don’t remember name) and this one is very positive and the second one is on the Lord of Metal e-zine this one has some criticism, but to be honest this review sucks you can check it out yourself and you will see. I think that guy, who reviewed our album, is not in the grindcrust music at all. Well thanks for your compliment and I don’t like to rate our albums, I can only say that we are satisfied with job done.

At the beginning of BG activity you cooperated with EBM records. Then signed to US Deatbag records, but "Krvave ruke-krvavi novac" came under EBM again. What was the reason of return? Work with Deathbag didn’t satisfy you?

Work with Deathbag records didn’t satisfy us at all. This was our biggest mistake. You see that girl Blythe, who was running this record label (I think this label don’t exist any more), she only fucked up us. She was working in the Relapse Records and she contact us with all those promises about how she knows how to promote our band and that she will bring B.G. to a higher level etc, etc…. But she did nothing, she was so full of shit. About EBMrecords only compliments, yes they are great and I will take this occasion to say hello to Jose Luis from EBMrec.

Are you ready enough to sign major (just let imagine it theoretically)?

No, I think we are not ready to sign major labels and it is sad, but I think we will never be. We are living in our bullshit country and we never had a chance to only play our music and live of that. We are all working and we just don’t have enough time for practice, hey let’s make something clear we are not really a band, we are just four fucks with great love for heavy riffs and that’s all. Well, Major labels will surely make more tours for band than the band itself, they are in music business and, of course, they have more contacts than band members, especially bands from our country. If signing for major label means more shows and more touring than why not?

You produced three full-lengths one by one in 2005-2006, but the fourth one came only in the end of 2009. What’s the reason of this three-year pause? Problems in band activity?

Two of these three full-lengths were already recorded in past years and that’s the only reason why they were released in two years, and also I think that “Nitko nas ne vidi… “ were released in 2007, correct me if I’m wrong.

Does new album contain all your new material for this moment or you have some tracks in reserve to release them in other stuff?

We are constantly producing new songs so we are now in the ending phase (we have 16 new songs) for our new full-length.

Before starting Bolesno Grinje you played in other bands. Tell a little about them. Do they exist for nowadays?

Yes we played in other bands, but except Desinence Mortification unfortunately those bands are dead. Rio, our drummer, is still playing guitar and lead vocal in Desinence Mortification, but AntiOtpad, where Jule & Hoc were playing and S.M.C., where I was lead vocal, doesn’t exist any more.

Was Bolesno Grinje successful from very early days? Or it was some period of misunderstanding in the band? Is it important to start band not only with professional musicians, but with good, like-minded friends?

Well, of course, it was time with a little bit of misunderstanding, but nothing serious. Like I said before, we are definitely not professional musician so only good like-minded friends can come in consideration and if they can play an instrument very good hey that’s just great, he he.

By the way, let me congratulate you with the 10th anniversary of your band activity! Do you plan some ways to celebrate this date? Maybe go on tour?

Hey, thank you Serge. Yes, 10 years have passed by and yes we have some plan to celebrate this date, but we'll not go on tour, because we can not leave our country until 2013, so we are completely fucked up. You see we have this prohibition to enter the EU country yet from 2004 or 2005 and that’s the reason we did only few shows outside our country. We are planning to do a free entrance show in our town Pula and share a stage with few bands from our town too.

How many tours did you have while BG activity?

I think I have answered this question in a previous one. We did only a minitour in Czech republic (4 shows) and we played at Obscene Extreme Fest and that was our best experience.

Your lyrics are in Croatian. Is it compelling stand? And what do you think about the statement, that English is the most suitable language for heavy music lyrics?

No it is not a compelling stand, I’m not saying that I can speak English like Croatian, but if we make an effort I’m sure we can write our lyrics in English too. We started in Croatian and we keep it that way. English for sure has some “fat” words, but I’m not sure that is the most suitable for heavy music.

You write on social topics, as I understood. Do you have a real purpose to affect somebody’s interest to social shit, which is happening in the world? Or it is just your vision of things?

We are not writing only the social topics, lots of our songs are with social topics, but we are mostly writing about stuff, that really happened to us and impressed us or about stuff, that surrounding us in some strange humoristic way.

To continue previous question… What do you think about active non-conformism in grind, hardcore, punk music? That is to say not only play music, but do clashes with the police, to struggle against system, etc. Do you carry along such activity?

No we are not carrying such activity, don’t know what else to say about this stuff.

What is the attitude of Croatian government to grind and in general heavy music? Do you have any problems with gig organizing or censorship? Or they don’t a matter?

No problems at all, they just don’t care.

So go on about music. Band activity needs many things – technical equipment, financial injections, free time… What Bolesno Grinje lacks for full happiness? Own record studio, tour van etc.

Well, we already have our recording studio. I mean our guitar player Jule has an recording studio, so we can record there any time we want. A financial injection this is good and FREE TIMES - yes, this is what we need most. And yes, of course, if somebody can erase that stupid prohibition for entering EU countries.

Imagine yourself as not a musician. In what area you could be engaged in that case? Maybe other genres of art or something far from it, engineering for example…

I’m a brand technician in authorized Volkswagen service (FUCK), so that’s my answer (FUCK).

There are many temptations in underground – drugs, alcohol (in large quantity) etc. What’s your advice how to avoid them? Did you ever have problems with such things?

Just be your self and don’t let nobody tells you what is good for you and what you should do to be more I don’t know what. I did a lot of bad stuff in my past. I did drugs, I had a lot of fights and a lot a lot of drinks. I still like to have a few beers (who don’t), but no more drugs and no more fights.

Can you name the worst thing in underground?

For me definitely drugs, especially if they are heavy.

Our traditional question – what you know about Ukraine?

Well, not much I have to say (don’t want to offend somebody). When I was seaman, I met a lot of great guys from Ukraine mostly from Odessa, we had a really great time together, especially if there was a bottle of Bacardi with us.

Thick, distorted beats and some of the angriest vocals in the scene currently. Will be teaming up for a collab with PTM, who will provide the bass heavy walls of noise.

Endless Humiliation: A rare appearance for this Philly band. Think of Prurient mixed with Bone Awl and Ildjarn. Fucking ugly, cold, and nasty noisy 2 piece black metal.

US goregrind idols Impetigo finally released their official DVD via Deathgasm records (USA). Digital video disc called "Defiling the Stage" includes live shows from 1988, 1991, 1992 and the 2007 Reunion show as well as a never-before-seen 2 minute zombie film made by Mark (guitar), when he was in junior high back around 1981)). We've talked about underground life on Southern Continent with Roby - The Kill guitarist and the chief of Blastasfuk production. I think, it will be interesting for you to read this conversation. Hi, Roby! Thanks for time you devoted to this interview…

Hey, Serge! Yes, it's hard finding a lot of time, when you play in a band, work flat out, run a label & have a family, ha. But I do still prefer interview on paper, so I’m not glued to this fkn screen all day!

But what’s about Internet? It is much faster for information, isn’t it? What’s your attitude to webzines?

I think the Internet has helped out in numerous ways, but for some people it’s also become an easy way to score free tunes. There are too many half-arsed webzines now days with fuck all promotion, asking bands for free material. Most of the time, it’s not reviewed, it’s just for their own ears & you never hear a word back from ‘em. Back in the better days, before the Internet took over our lives, there was more of an effort involved with just the postage system. Genuine labels & zines would occasionally contact you, or you would contact them for your release to be reviewed or perhaps an interview; most of the time, you would get free copies of their ‘zine in exchange for the tunes. Some people wouldn’t agree & say I’m old school, but I prefer the actual record, cassette or disc in my hand, not just some free torrent download you found searching the net.

Ok, it’s time to talk about music… My first question is about your latest release – “Blast Beat’n the Shit Outta PBS”. Whose was idea to do such release, are you satisfied with result?

Yeah, I decided to release this recording through Blastasfuk production, because we had two interstate shows coming up with The Kill and nothing to bring along with us! At first, I was hesitant, because I knew this release would be rushed & it being a live recording, wasn’t really the way I wanted these unreleased tracks being first heard. But in the end I released it and I’m happy with the way it turned out. We used all 16 tracks & didn’t delete any of the mistakes, so parts in some songs are a little sloppy & you can’t hear Jay’s back up vocals at all … But it still came out good enough… It’s Grindcore!
Clay of Rescued from Life records, Texas, USA has offered to release these tunes on vinyl… Nice!

Tell about your label – Blastasfuk production. What interesting releases out?
I have so much on my plate at the moment, it’s fun, but sending me broke & mental at the same time.
Just before The Kill release, I did the White Eyes – “Beatmode” CD. If you haven’t heard this band yet, “make sure you do!”. I took a punt with W.E. after I heard their 4 track demonstration CD/EP… Fukkkk! What they ended up recording for Blastasfuk was amazing! “Beastmode" is like an explosion. You could say Discordance Axis on speed with vocals that make your ears bleed. The CD is broken up in three chapters with a total of 31 tracks. Each chapter just gets more & more manic as it goes on. You can’t just listen to this release once, if you know what I mean. I have never heard anything like it in my life…
Just before White Eyes I did the Hatred Surge – “Collection ‘04-‘07” CD. I was stoked, when Alex agreed to let me release all H.S. sold out material up until ‘07 on the one CD. I would say this guy composes the most pissed off hardcore, imaginable… Picture “From Enslavement to Obliteration” meets westside horizons. What more can I say…. Also released through Blastasfuk – Noisear (USA), Hutt (Brazil), Gate (Japan)…

And what are planned for future?

Yes, approx. 29 tracks were recorded in the first week of January 2009 at Necro Dero by metal Justin in his garage. But only 17 or so will be used from this recording & seperated for 3 split 7” EP’s: Mortalized (Jap), Lycanthrophy (Czech), Captain Cleanoff (Aus).

And the rest are for full-CD?

Yes, all other tracks and newies will be recorded in a studio mid 2010 for a full length CD/LP.

Due to its geographic position Australia is apart from the rest of the world. How does it influence the grindcore development? We even have such term as “Australian grindcore”, that is to say some kind of strong grindcore with specific elements. And your grind scene is intense enough. But what country do you consider the most grinding in the world?

I think there are many places in the world that have a half decent grind scene. I couldn’t really pin point a location, but I reckon the most extreme grindcore I’ve heard would have to of come from our neighbours in Japan. Yeah, we are on the arse end of the Earth, but Japan ain’t so far from us & I think we are both influenced by this country & we also influence these fellas with Aussie bands like Warsore, early Blood Duster, Undinism, Egrosid etc… Then you got Japanese bands like Unholy Grave, Gore Beyond Necropsy, Disgust, Sensless Apocalypse & so much more… Japanese grindcore was such a huge influence on me in my teen years…
Also festivals like the Maryland Death fest in the USA, that has its fair share of grindcore! In europe you have people like Curby/Obscene Extreme, who puts on some killers festivals in the Czech Republic! These guys keep the scene alive… I’m still waiting for our invite? Hint hint… Ha!

As you mentioned fests, tell about grindcore gigs in Australia. How often do they take place in your city? How many fans usually visit them?

We have a few grind shows here in Melbourne. On average say one or two a month. The turnout can be ok depending on the line up. But it’s nothing like it used to be. I would say between anywhere from 80 – 150 heads if it’s a good line up. If ya mix d’beat, grindcore, hardcore & metal bands, it’s usually a lot better. I rarely go to shows these days, unless I have nothing going on, or some good bands come from interstate or overseas. I got no excuse other than getting old & lazy)).

What can you say about attitude of common Australians towards grindcore music and in general to heavy music? I know you have Heavy Music Awards and even death/grind bands take part in it…

I can’t speak for all, but the crew I know is more kicked back. We don’t take our music so serious. A night out in Melbourne is more or less an excuse to sink piss & make a cunt out of ourselves. I personally wouldn’t have a clue about those heavy metal music awards… I’m not into it.

The Kill history has several r.i.p. & rebirths. Why it was so important for you to start band again and again, in spite of the fact you all had already played in other bands? Is the current line-up came to stay for a long time?

Blame Jay… He’s been diagnosed with a bad case of “can’t be fucked!”. I think if The Kill decided to stop again, that would be it… Jay & I started The Kill & we’re still both in the band… We have always had vocal problems, but this time round we have a nice young chap full of fresh ideas! His name is Nik.

How do The Kill members divide their time between this band and other bands they play in? How often do you play gigs in this line-up?

I think The Kill has always been a side project, but both Nik & Jay seem to give it %100, so i ain’t complaining. Just going into record seems to never happen for us. We jam once a week on average & everyone is cool with that. Unless it’s Australia Day, or something just as important!
As for shows… It always differs. We can play 3 times in one month or not play for 3 months at all. When we are asked to do a show; we’re usually keen unless we’re away.

What bands The Kill members playing in?

Jay ‘s also in Fuck I’m Dead and Identity Theft. Nik’s also in Super Fun H appy Slide, Holy Boner and Rocket Surgery.

Have you any plans to play The Kill show overseas and what country do you want to visit with concert?

I would love to play some shows with The Kill in Japan, or really anywhere in the world, where people dig grindcore! Not just to play gig’s, but to see the world & meet all the nerds i’ve been chatting with over the years in person. But no! We don’t have any plans as of yet!

What does it mean for you to be the part of underground? Is it difficult to combine common social life and musical activity?

Ha… What a question! If you’re normal, I don’t see why you can’t? Though I do admit, I have grown out of wearing the typical offensive death metal/gore grind t-shirts. But other than that, I listen to tunes everyday & live my family life also. I do try & brain wash my surroundings with the noise I listen to, & hope that some day they will wake up realize what real music is. My son doesn’t have an option. He was born metal! Well wiggles cross over!

And how you came in grindcore?

I got right into grindcore in the mid 90’s after listening to bands like Assuck, Dahmer & Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Before that I only knew of death, thrash & black metal thanks to my mate Ash! I then got back into playing guitar again, started jam’n with Ash & eventually formed a band. Started going out to watch other local bands & meeting people. Before I knew it, it became a weekend routine & was hanging out amongst a regular crowd, which was the scene at the time. Underground music should be far from main stream music & with no intentions of making big dollars through playing shows. And most of all it shouldn’t be a fashion contest,
it also should be pubs & basements, not concerts unless you’re supporting Slayer or Black Sabbath.

One of my first metal tapes, by the way))... And do you remember your first metal cassette?

I can’t remember my first cassette, but i think the first metal records I bought were Megadeth – “So far… So good… So what?” on 12” LP & Iron Maiden – “Maiden Japan” 12” EP. Only because the covers were so fgn brutal! I remember going back to Deer Park Plaza not too long after to get “Rust in Peace”.
From there it just got out of hand… Brutal!

I’ve heard about Melbourne Grind Syndicate. Is it real organization and what can you tell about it?

I once did a d.i.y. paper sticker for The Kill & added a little slogan underneath the logo “Melbourne Grindcore Syndicate’. Ever since it’s occasionally used on flyers, reviews etc. The word got around the world, ha! It’s hilarious.

Do such terms as "world crisis, oil wars" mean something for you or you apart from politics?

I don’t watch much TV unless the AFL (Australian Football Leauge) is on. I hate the way the media thrives on other people’s misery! Everyone should grow up, learn to live like civilized human beings & stop abusing the world we live in, so there is a future for our children.

Traditional question: what do you know about Ukraine, post-USSR and our grindcore bands?

I got Epicrise CD’s a while back from Ukragh productions. And a long time ago I got a free copy of the Mortem – “Filicide” CD. I think those guys were from Russia. I remember them sounding a lot like old Cannibal Corpse… Other than that, I don’t know much at all. Ha!

UzhGoreRot Open Air Festival 2010

Firstly, about the fest itself. Debut one took place on June, the 12th in Ukrainian Uzhgorod city. Twelve bands from four countries (Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Czech), among them Dead Infection, Neuropathia, Lycanthrophy, Dementor and others (full list you can find on official UzhGoreRot site). That fest became the follow-up of numerous Ukrainian gigs - Death Metal Assault - held from 2002 and marked by such well-known names as Napalm Death, Epitome, Sickbag, Hate, Parricide etc.
And now fest organizers are glad to announce about UzhGoreRot 2010! This year on July, the 10th, Ukraine assembles friends again. There is no detail information about bands-participants yet, so get in touch! All fest news will be immediately posted in For Grind webzine.

This awesome crusty hardcore/sludge EP by Canadian Cursed comes with such comment: "This is the last Cursed recording, from the doomed final tour that we didn't know was the doomed final tour yet. Recorded live off the floor like we'd play it. 5 songs spanning all 3 LPs that we came to play faster and differently live than they were originally recorded".
As for me, I always liked their impressive atmospheric crust with great sludge riffs, which makes my a little cataleptic. So it's strongly recommended for all connoisseurs of such kind of music!

Paskuda / Depresy Mouse split 7" EP (2010)

Good split turned up to me just at the right moment this hazy February morning. I have listened to one of these bands before - Depresy Mouse from Czech (and it rules!), but another one - Slovak Paskuda became a pleasant fiding for me. So I pressed "Play" button more and more...

Some words about music itself. Paskuda open the split with six tracks (5+intro) of energetic grind/hardcore with some downtempo parts. It reminded me Brasilian veterans Rot, and I think that such oldschool bands influence Slovak dudes in their activity as a rule. I really liked raw, solid sound of Paskuda music.
Depresy Mouse also come with six tracks of fast, explosive mix of grindcore, darkened crust and some thrashcore touches. It's like Abortion meets Agathocles, something in this way. I think fans of both mentioned bands will like Depresy Mouse very much.

Gadget are working on the new album

Swedish grind dudes Gadget reported about their preparings for the new album! Here are some comments from first hand: "...we're taking it easy on the touring side (as always) but even one off shows. Why, you may ask? It's just for the single fact that we're putting all our free time on focusing on writing A NEW ALBUM instead. Yeah that's right. We've got a few new songs ready already + lots of material that needs to be taken care of. Who knows, if we're lucky we even might record something in 2010..."

Lock Up will record material for split with Brutal Truth

In February grindcore all-stars band Lock Up will start the record session of their part for split with another living legend Brutal Truth. I think, it's needless to mention, but Lock Up members are: Tomas Lindberg; Shane Embury; Nick Barker and Anton Reisenegger, who replaced Jesse Pintado, passed away in 2006. Also musicians are working on material for new full-length album, which will be released later this year.
Nick Barker said: "After very successful performance at the Damnation festival in Leeds last October, and after an eight-year haitus with almost a decade past since we last played in the U.K., Lock Up have decided to write a new album and play selective dates (mostly festival appearances) throughout this year and 2011 in support of the new record.
Although at this point it's still unclear which record label will pick up the band's third studio release, there is plenty of interest from a number of independent labels.
I won't bore anyone with the usual spin of 'It's the best, heaviest or fastest material we've ever written,' but what I will say is the new material is totally relentless and very punishing, more so than our previous efforts... If brutal is your thing, then you will love it."

It is interesting to note that vocal part in one song called "Totalitarian" belongs to Napalm Death frontman Mark 'Barney' Greenway. I think there is no need to tell you the bio of this cult Spanish goregrind band or introduce its line-up. The word "Haemorrhage" must be written on each true grinder's heart (or gut, brain, liver, according to style:)). In spite of tight schedule, guitarist Luisma have devoted his time to answer my questions, so read the result...

Hi, Luisma! How do you manage to play shows, to communicate with press, to do other things in your personal life? You must be tired of such tempo. Give an advice how to plan life time?

Yes, sometimes it’s a little bit stressing, but I can handle it. Today the most hardworking thing in a band is not the music by itslef. Its promotion, websites, etc., which steal the most of our time. Anyway my secret is sleeping less than other people. So I have more hours to do things.

Haemorrhage is already one of the significant bands in the grind world. Do you have the ultimate goal? That is to say what you want to reach as a result of the band activity?

We never have goals, cause in this music style is stupid to do that. Our only goal is that our fans like our music, but we know we can't get money or very big album sales. We won't get rich from this music so our only goal can be get fun and give fun to others; but for us, all those things that happened with the band are very incredible. We never expected Haemorrhage would be as big as its now.

How do you think does any band have such turning moment, when its activity must be stopped (cause of personal reasons, lack of interesting ideas and so on)?

Yes, that would be the reasons to stop the band. When I have no interest in this music or I think I have nothing more to give I will stop. Yes, there are many personal reasons that could make me think in stopping. I have two children and a dog, and when I go out to play I must look for someone who take care of my dog and my children and that’s not easy. But now we are totally into Haemorrhage. We want to record a very good album for Relapse and that’s my biggest motivation so far.

How did you start this musical year? By the way, happy past Merry Christmas and New Year to you!))

Oh Thanks! The same for you, best wishes for 2010. I started this year rehearsing our new songs. On January 2nd we were practising at our rehearsal room, so I think it’s a good start. My goal is making a good album. I don't think in live shows or other things only this album.

What was the story with Milano airport? Why gig organizers didn’t accommodate you for these four days?

I'm sure if we have called Giulio he would have helped us, but that wasn’t easy cause the roads was full of snow. The airlines also gave us a hotel, but the transport didn't work correctly, so we prefered to stay at the airport instead of taking the risk of getting blocked on the road and loss our plane. The problem there is that there were fucking big cues to do everything. To change tickets, to get food, etc... I was 8 hours in a cue, so this didn't leave us move out of there, cause always we were expecting to see if a plane could take off to Madrid... It was a big bullshit.

I think, most of men-journalists always say compliments to your pretty guitarist Ana. So I’m too!)) Can you sign the difference between “all-male band” and a band with female member? You know there are many jokes about woman’s reason. Do you have any misunderstanding on gender ground?

Honestly, Ana is playing in this band for so many years that now is impossible for me to say differences between a all-male band and a band with female. I think in essence its the same cause we are all musicians and we are here only to play Grind but people outside the band make it different, always remembering us we have a girl, and so on...I think the best news for the Grind scenes and Metal scene in general is that girls come to this music. You know our own attitude in our style is not positive to let women join the scene. Too many of those that make jokes about women are gays. I knew too many guys making jokes about metal women until they got married with a non-metal girl and she retired them for the scene. Thats ridiculous in my opnion.

Haemorrhage inspired many gore bands all over the world, it’s a fact. Are you proud on this? And in general what personal inner changes have happened to you comparing with early days of the band?

Yes we are proud of this. In our first years some people thought we were crazy when we appeared with our medical clothes on stage playing this shitty music. In those years it was cool to see bands like Cannibal Corpse with 5 guys with black T-shirts headbanging on stage. Thats ok, but it became boring when 100000 bands do the same. So we wanted to be different and nowadays many people understand what we did and we created a style with a good bunch of followers. Now I have seen pix of Cannibal Corpse dressed with medical clothes...What's going on??? Who is crazy now?? ha, ha... I think we have never cahnged our attitude but obviusly we have suffered personal changes, but we tryed they didn't affect to the band. life's a bitch you know...he, he...

Do you help young bands in their first steps?

Yes, we always help new ands in the way we can, I always help them with tabs, to get a "gory" sound etc...I use to answer many quiestions, but sometimes we have to say no to thousands of new bands that want split EPs with us. Not because we don't want to sahre a recording with new bands, but its only a problem of time. We don't have time to record too many songs.

And do you want your children to be in underground too?

I want my children live their own lives. Its stupid to think they will be Grinders like we are. How would I be if my father though this way??? Maybe I would be playing in a band like Beatles...ha, ha...They have the grind, punk and metal music in their veins, cause they know it from their childhood, but I never say them what they have to listen to.

Haemorrhage played in many countries all over the world. Do you have the traditional “culture program” in each new country you visit? That is to say to see historical places, to buy some souvenirs etc. What trips were the most memorable in that sense?

Yes, we always try to visit cool places in every country we play. Obviously sometimes thats impossible. I have very good memories of our Japan tour, but we enjoyed a lot on Maryland cause we visit Washington and other cool places. Of course we've been in lots of great places in Europe: Viena, Praha, Moscow, Paris, Berlin, etc...I love all of them...Also some smaller towns are great: Gent in Belgium, Cremona in Italy, Strassbourg in France...

How you keep in fit and reserve you physical forces while long tours? Have you some rules which help you not to be exhausted by the end of touring?

I rarely get phisycally exhausted on tours, its more Psychological problems. Stress or whatever. Its hard to come back home for me and stay more than one day in the same place...That gets me down. But during the tours the only problem is hangover. Thats all.

Is it important to have positive spirit every time you get on stage to play your set? How do you tune yourself if you have some personal problems or something like that?

Yes, I always try to be positive before I get on stage but many times if something fails on stage you can get down easily. You must fight against that in every gig. Before the show I just think in giving my last drop of blood to the people that has come to see us.

What are the following three terms mean to you: “good gig”, “good band”, “good label”?

I like open-air gigs. A good gig for us is Party-sna, Brutal Assault, OEF...
I like bands with attitude. Like Impetigo.
Relapse is a good label I think.

Can you name bad sides of underground community?

Rip-offs, bootlegs, fake magazines and bands, etc. that lie to get free stuff. Bad gig organizers.

Did you ever immolate something in your life for band activity?

Yes, Haemorrhage steals a big part of my time and thats time to be with my children, my friends and family, but its the price to pay.

If we speak about underground of early 90’s and modern one, what things are gone, but you wish they be, and what good achievements you can sign?

I wish to be 15 or 16 again!!! ha, ha... I think the scene had many new positive things. Internet was one of that. Its impossible to imagine for your fans how hard it was to go to the post office every week!!...There were negative things too during some years the scene has been divided: grinders, death metal fans, black metal fan, punks... That didn't happen in the 90's. I think we are recovering this now. Its a fake attitude, cause we know at their homes many black metal people listen to Death Metal and Punk, Punks listen to Death and Grind, etc...so why we have to hide what we listen to.

What do you think about such info resource as Internet? About sharing music through the web?

I think it’s possitive for promotion and also to look for info about bands, gigs, etc.... but many people say is a metal fan a they have no CDs or LPs in their collections, only a Hard Drive of 500 Gb full of Mp3...thats lame I think. Many people abused of downloads and that will have consequences cause bands don't get money from their albums and studios are expensive....I don't know what future will bring. It’s hard to say.

Our traditional question – what do you know about Ukraine, about our bands? By the way you played in May 2009 with my country fellows Epicrise on "Gore Galore Fest II”

I know many things about your country, I have a Ukraine TV channel and sometimes I watch it. I would like to vist Kiev someday. About bands I know Fleshgore. I see Ukranian bands sometimes in mags over there but I can't remember their names...Unfortunately I didn't saw any band at Gore Galore cause we get there too late and when we arrived to the club we only have time to see a little bit of Leng'tche cause we must start to prepare our stuff for the show.

Some words about Haemorrhage plans for 2010? What can we wait for?

Our biggest goal in 2010 will be the new album. I don't know when it will come out but I hope it won't dissapoint our fans. We want to make something good. We also are preparing another DVD, but that still a early project. Nothing is still concreted.

Joe Ptacek R.I.P. (1972-2010)

Awful news came from the cult death metal act Broken Hope. Joe Ptacek, vocalist and co-founder of the band, tragically passed away on Wednesday, January, the 20th, from self-inflicted gun shot to the head. He was 37 years old.
His former bandmate Jeremy Wagner said: "It's with profound sadness and shock that [I report that] my friend and former bandmate, Joe Ptacek, has died. Joe was my high-school friend who formed a death-metal band with me called Broken Hope. We always dreamed of putting out albums and touring the world. After graduating, we achieved a lot of those dreams and released five albums, performed worldwide, appeared in countless international magazines and did a video for MTV. We were on Metal Blade Records and met all of our heroes and performed everywhere… Not bad for two teenagers out of Wildwood, Illinois.
After 2000, Joe and I lost touch until just a few years ago. In recent months, we reconnected, hung out and became friends again. I just chatted with him after the New Year as he and I had found a drummer and a rehearsal spot where we were to begin working to bring back a new, resurrected form of Broken Hope.
As of late, Joe was positive, healthy and had a mature and humble attitude that made me happy to see.
I'm thankful to have known him in my lifetime and to have traveled many a mile and share many a stage with such an original character. Moreover, I'm thankful to have hugged him and to have made him smile the last time we were together. Why he chose to take his life, I'll never even begin to fathom, but I pray he's in a better place.
So, to all of you extreme metal heads out there, I ask you to raise a toast in memory of Joe Ptacek, the absolute, hands down MOST BRUTAL DEATH-METAL VOCALIST EVER!
Joe, I love you and I will miss you, brother…

Re-press of the first Defecation album

Extreme Smoke 57: Enjoy your life and be positive!

It was pleasantly for me to make this interview. Firstly, I like conversations with old bands and musicians, because of their real, "not-fashion" underground spirit. And secondly, my interlocutor, Boco, vocalist and co-founder of the oldest grind band in Slovenia Extreme Smoke 57, showed himself as clear-thinking, little sceptic, but very positive person. The band started in 1990, so we had large area for our talk. Read it just now.

Hi, Boco! Thanks for doing this interview. What’s new in Extreme Smoke 57 camp?

Cheers! Sorry, it took some time to get my ass off for this interview, I was lazy (honestly, only couple of days gone. Not so lazy:) - author's note). Nothing special here except that we just recorded new material for new record. Still mastering to do and then I hope the things with the record should go fast. I hope!

Oh, cool! Tell about new material. How many tracks? How do you plan to use it in future?

It was about time we went into studio to do something new. It took some time before we finally did that. We were supposed to make these recordings already in December 2009, but the producer was away with his family, so we could make it only in January this year. We gonna use this material for new split 10" that should came out on German grind/powerviolence record label T.V.G. records. Six tracks were recorded, but we will only use five of them.

The history of Extreme Smoke 57 has two periods: 1990-1992 and 2008 till now. Whose was the idea to reform the band?

Yes, as everyone knows, we start back in 1990 and split two years later, as I had to join military duty, 3 months after my drummer Gogo (RIP) have to do the same shit and then also the bass player quit. In the mean time me and the bass player were active in other bands/projects and then one day the idea to reform the band came out by our bass player so we put the shit together and did our first pratcise in august 2008.

What had you did while “the dead period” 1992-2008 besides music? Making career, creating families…

Ah, lots of other things... Too much to tell you shortly. Lots of bands, squatting, prison, tours with other bands etc. Me, I didn't start no family, but the bass player have two kids and the new drummer too. Me and the guitarist are single and live our life from day to day.

And who are you in common life?

I live social life as anyone else. Don't like to speak about it. Miha, the guitar player, works all the days and enjoys to play guitar with his other band TRDOЋIVI. The same goes for the drummer Boљtjan, he have two lovely daughters and plays in TRDOЋIVI as well and bass player Dean have two nice kids as well and works in a critical center surrounded by computers, telephones and monitors/cameras. If you dial the number 112 you have many chances to get him on the phone, ha ha ha (it's a kind of center that people calls for help/inform, if anything goes wrong on the streets, earthquakes, accidents, bad weather etc.)

What does it mean – Extreme Smoke 57? Name is rather original without standard words like “sick”, “war” etc. It’s connected to green dope, isn’t it?))

Ha ha ha ha ha, no no, is just a funny name, that came out in the early beginning. 57 are working class cheap cigarettes, so you can find out what it means :) I never choose the band name connected to the words you wrote there. Also my lyrics are not about revolution, war or whatever, just personal views on life through my eyes and mind. I see it stupid, that punk bands wrote lyrics about what's wrong/right, because I think if you have just a little bit of healthy brains you see it yourself that's something very, very wrong in this common society. We all know that, so why should I write lyrics like this and try to explain them on our gigs while only punk/metal (etc.) people standing there and listen what you have to say. Politicians have to read those lyrics but they don't give a shit as we know. Right!

Well, social problems let’s left for mass-media… By the way, what do you think about the level of modern music journalistic? Do you read any zines, webzines?

I don't care too much what "mass-media" say about us. In fact, they don't and for me that's fine. I rather prefer some underground fanzines/magazines, because we do music for that kind of people not for commercial "journalists". Well, is cool sometimes you read something about your band in the press like this but, please, not all the time. Anyway I don't believe in them and for me is enough we release records/ tapes all around the world, so the real underground knows about us. I do my music for people/ friends that like this kind of music. That's also the reason I'll never start sing normal (clean). Fuck the mainstream anyway...

Some words about mentioned underground. Extreme Smoke 57 members are in underground for a long time. How do you appreciate the time spent in extreme music? What you have received from it? And have you ever regretted of been grindhead?

I live in this scene all my life, for at least 22 years now and I don't regret anything. Is just my way of life and I like it. Can't say for other members, but I do it. Thanks to this scene I'm still alive and in one piece. Sometimes is hard, but what the fuck - everything is hard, so I try not to care too much and just be myself. Drink your beer, be friendly, listen to good music and let live. And use your head of course.

Have your band ever struggled the political system and did you have problems with law (you’ve mentioned something above)?

As I told you before we are not political band. I don't trust in revolution. Is better evolution if talk about this now. What I do in my personal life, trouble with law/ police or whatever is only my own shit.

How did you personally come in extreme music? Remember those young days. How have changed you tastes since that time?

My tastes didn't change. I prefer a lot the old bands/music, but I listen to the music all the time, even other kinds of music, sometimes ambiental chillout or whatever. That noisy music we started to listen very young, when we discovered all that old England/US/Scandinavian/Yugoslavia hardcore back in 80's. I mean, I started with all this heavy metal stuff (which I still keep respective and like to listen a lot), but I get bored with this never-ending solos and long songs. So, fast hardcore was perfect for me :). That's how it started, with Doom, E.N.T., Rattus, U.B.R., Sore Throat, Fear Of God, Stress D.A., 7MON, Crawl Noise, Sic, Napalm Death, Agathocles, Patareni/Buka, Atavistic, Deviated Instinct and so on. Still like this bands a lot yea!

Have you realized all you “art wishes” in Extreme Smoke 57? Or you have some personal creative thoughts which may be realized in other styles? Is it important for musician to put all his soul to what he is doing or it’s possible to have some creative reserve?

I try to keep this separately. What I do with the band have nothing to with my "art" things. I like to weld the things together with Iron. With band we'll just try to put the music together as long as we can.

You do it well for a long time! Your band is considered to be the first grind band in Slovenia. Was it difficult to be the first? What was reaction of fans?

I don't know about the reactions, people just say is good what we do. In early days we didn't care too much what other people said, because no-one liked us too much, but we continued on our own and started to send out tons of tapes around the world (tape trading, of course, he he), so the world underground movement knew about our band and soon we got an offer to release our first split EP (in 1991) and that's how everything started. Now people here have other feelings about ES57 and have much more respect than in the early days. Even people that talked shit about us, but we always give a fuck about them anyway. We were still around and we are still here and that's what it counts, I think.

What do you think about modern styles of metal (metalcore, deathcore) and grind (porn grind, shit grind). Do you help young bands in their activity?

I listen what I like to. Don't like too much this bullshit porn/gore-core or metal-core, but ok, is up to them what they gonna do with their life. And yes, I still like to help the young bands out (organizing a gig, put them on some compilation or just introduce them to other cool people), if the guys in the band are cool and not hypocrite assholes.

Which statement is closer to you: “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” or “be straight age and vegan”. Or maybe you have your own statement?

I have my own statement - be friendly, be cool, drink your beer and let other living beings live. I'm not vegetarian, I drink alcohol and smoke pot, but take it in a positive meaning. And don't go over the limit, because sometimes it can end really, really bad. Just enjoy your life and be positive. And again - think with your head.

Our traditional question – what do you know about Ukraine and Ukrainian bands?

Ages ago I was in good contact with a cool guy from Sumy, I think. His name was Leonid Savin and we traded a lot of tapes in this time. That was in beginning of 90's. He had this dark death/ blackmetal band called BRAINSTORM. I still keep these demos. I wish to meet this guy sometime, because he was ok. Then I know for some other bands, but can't remember now, sorry. Too much music all the time.

Well thanks a lot for your interest. Wish this could be a printed zine because it looks "cooler", but, hey, the word is important! Not necessary internet is not ok. After playing at the “Obscene Extreme” festival we have a new drummer – Andrew. During October-December we studied songs, worked on the concert program, and rehearsal new stuff. Soon we will record new songs as promo for labels.

Bukkake fest XXL
11 April we will blast with “Bukkake XXL” festival with Septicopyemia as headliners to celebrate band’s birthday. We booked the most interesting and strongest bands on Russian death/grind scene like Duodildo Vibrator, Clit’n’Slit, GoreAnus, Quality Pain and more. 9 bands and 7 hours of sickness".

Change in Ebanath line-up

Sudden news from Ukrainian grinders Ebanath: "On January the 12th our vocalist Max left the band 'cause of his disinterst in further band activity driven by personal reasons. We support his decision. Max spent long time with the band just from its beginning and such turn of events became a great loss for us, but we're staying good friends! Max's last work in Ebanath will be recording of vocal parts for some covers planned to be include in some tributes. Our new vocalist is Victor 'Cucumber Princess' from Ukrainian deathcore band Slain. So the upcoming record of 10-minute EP will be the test for new member and farewell for ex-vocalist Max.
